Moar mods

Did some work on my RG. These pics were done while I did my Kshatriya. I’m going for a Sword Impulse colour scheme, and did some shading on the red. Painted some of the white pieces as well, but forgot to take pics of it. I still did the different colours in the inner frame, and did some detailing. Broke the back of one of the thighs, but whatever.

The frame is a medium grey (I believe) and I have some German Grey for the visible parts. Details done in by hand using Testor’s enamels. The yellow is slightly mixed, and I sprayed some clear yellow on top of it but it did absolutely nothing.

Painting is done. The slow process of decalling has begun!

Decals from Samueldecals, exact copy of the Astray’s stock decals.

Another WIP, this thing is taking me forever. Most of the painting is done by now, only the white on the other arm and leg are remaining. Then I need to topcoat, line, and decal this thing up.

For some reason my red’s turned out slightly different and darker than expected. Look at the picture of the back of the arm to see what i’m talking about. There’s two shades of red, but it was actually just one red. :S I do like how the leg turned out though.

This stuff was actually completed a while ago, but I wanted to wait for other bits to be done so I could post all at once. I switched back to Tamiya spray primer after these parts, simply due to availability. And well, I also ran into a couple of problems.

1) Matt white is terrible for doing washes. Matt colours in general actually, since they don’t provide a smooth surface for the paint to travel along. I didn’t clear coat the pieces enough before trying to do a wash (which I’m still not amazing at), so stuff got really messy. I then proceeded to switch to gloss white to paint. Which leads to…

2) I can’t, for the life of me, get white to paint properly. It always sputters, or comes out really particle-ly. I suspect that it’s my not cleaning my airbrush properly, but if anyone has any tips, they’re greatly welcomed. So I ended up using up an entire jar for an arm and a leg of the PG, and I don’t think I did it right, which means I need to go get more and try again :(

Bleh.

I am one lazy bum. This thing’s been done for almost a week now, and I shoot it now. Bleh. I seem to have taken a break from Gunpla this week, mainly due to going out with my friends (ie. having a real life) a lot lately. I went over a lot of the details with Testor’s Silver enamel. I might go back and do a bit more detailing, with gold or something.

ZOMG A VIDEO. (because it shows off stuff better).

After reading an old old guide on dannychoo, I tried to shade my Unicorn Gundam. Since it’s an HG, I thought it would be appropriate to test stuff on. Then again, if I don’t try something new every now and then, there’d be no improvement.

I tried it on the shield, and then it turned out far too heavy, so I stripped that down, and will repaint it with the white parts of Astray (because I’m lazy and don’t like cleaning my airbrush an extra time).

Basically the process is to thin a paint out a lot and spray it very carefully around the edges. I sorta over sprayed it here and there, and whenever my hand stopped to go in the opposite direction, I’d get some blotches. I used the same colour I had for the joints and stuff. In retrospect, I should have used enamels or lacquer. Enamels because I know enamels come off easily with mineral spirits if I mess up. But I don’t want to put EVERY SINGLE KIND OF PAINT through my airbrush, because then it feels cheap. Sorta like a “whore”, because I’m using so many different kinds of…yeah. nvm.

ANYWAYS. Pics. C&C?

PS. I also fail at taking pics, because the shading hardly shows up in pics. Trust me, it’s really obvious in real life. It looks like it rolled through the desert or something.

Bleh. Long weeks of exams means I couldn’t do anything. I’ve started painting the internal frame. It’s going to be a couple of shades, namely a “Metallic Red”, “Copper Metallic Red” and “Copper”. “Metallic Red” is a mix of chrome silver and clear red, with a bit of copper, and “copper metallic red” is the same but with different ratios.

Paint layers are prime->sand imperfections->gloss black->[insert colour here]->FFA->enamel silver detailing (for molded in pipes) (not shown) ->and maybe more FFA later.

A couple of pics to show the different colours. I think it looks more yellow in pictures than it should. Shitty basement lighting + cell phone. YEP.
